Yama Ji was indeed badass, but his death was bound to happen, it was a rite of passage, in every manga series a powerful old guy usually dies in battle, One piece = Whitebeard, Naruto = Third Hokage and Bleach = Yama ji.
But I think I see why Kubo did it this way, he couldn't let him die without showing us his bankai and how he uses it (cause that would be really disappointing, if it he was beaten while using it or it got stolen straight way), plus he used it on someone who easily defeated Zaraki.

RIP Yama Ji, but you were still a greart boss with the most epic bankai, only the greatest of men can die standing.
Great artwork.

thank you very much man , Yamaji was a badass character i personally didn't see his death coming so soon in this arc i was predicting that his death would have place while all shinigamis gather their forces and launch an assault at Quincy's HQ ( Ice Palace as noted in the databook ) but i'm satisfied with the heroic way he died . Everything about him was revealed his past with Juhabakh , with kyoraku & ukitaké.. with sasakibé chojiro ...

I thought that too about at first, about the gathering together at the Quincy HQ, but then I looked back, like when Aizen said the "Gotei 13 would fall due to his death" or Jushiro stated that "No one could take his place as Head Captain", I guessed Kubo wanted us to see how the Gotei 13 would handle without Yama-Ji.

yeah that's true and thank god Kyoraku shunsui took care of things from yamaji's death & forth for i find him the most suitable one for that position among the other captains , He's lazy i'll give you that but he's rational maybe more rational than yamaji was , the only other good candidate for head captain's position is ukitaké juushiro but since he's still ill i stick with kyoraku , and this latter isn't bad at battle , he's got a monstruous zanpakutou giving him the chance to use two awesome & deadly abilities , which means he can get things done without having to even think of bankai :)

Yamamoto meets his old nemesis. I should confess that I was hoping that there would be a bit more of a fight to it, but the fact that the Head-Captain finally revealed his Bankai at long last, after so many years, such a long time waiting.

From their dialogue, and the death glares they give - you can tell this is truly a showdown between a man and his archenemy. It's pretty clear they flat-out despise each other.

Juhabach says he doesn't count the Head-Captain as one of their "Potential War Powers" - for that very reason, and because he believes Yamamoto to be weak. In turn, Juhabach is the only person that Yamamoto doesn't refer to as "child" - or use his Shikai against, instead - he simply opts to nuke him out of existence with his Bankai.

I personally enjoyed this specific fight too it was thrilling even though it was only the paper version. Can't imagine how breathe taking will it be once it's animated . I respect also kubo's management & story plot during this whole arch especially yamamoto's fight & heroic death ( Die standing ) it was well played. Regarding the relation between juhabakh and yamamoto . This latter is the who should be given credits for not undrestimating his opponent though he nearly killed him once upon a time and let him live 1000 years of disgrace . Juhabakh on the other hand is only a cold hearted villain . He is strong indeed & charismatic and a lot of things but he is nothing front of yamamoto though the result of the fight between the two . Thank you for passing by mate and for your magnificent insights i appreciate the passion :)
